This bridge is similar to the M-48 Bridge, which is longer, and retains a greater degree of historic integrity. Review that page for a more complete overview of the importance of this structure type.
This bridge, compared to M-48 is much less impressive. One year newer, with a 1964 construction date, this bridge has much more extensive dirt approaches and less of the steel stringer approaches. It still however has more steel beam spans on the approach than most expressway overpasses. The steel bent supports from a distance appear to also have v-lacing identical to M-48. However, a closer inspection reveals that rivets do not connect this v-lacing, and instead the v-lacing is simply welded to the steel. Also, the connections are all bolted, with no rivets present. This all may be due to some past repair project. This bridge, along with the M-48 Bridge retains original guardrails that are characteristic to the time period in Michigan.
