Built originally for the National Pike, this bridge is an extremely old surviving example of a stone arch, and it retains a remarkable integrity of materials and design. The bridge has not served the main road for a long time, having been bypassed by a replacement bridge. The realignment took place so long ago in fact that its replacement bridge on newer alignment a short distance south of the bridge, a concrete arch bridge, is itself historic. Despite the new alignment, the stone arch continued to serve traffic until 1972 when Tropical Storm Agnes damaged the bridge and brought and end to vehicular use for the bridge. The bridge was later restored for non-motorized use.
