This bridge is an impressive railway bridge that carries two tracks over the Rideau River/Canal waterway. It does so at fairly high level, and as a result no movable span was needed for boats. The bridge sits on an impressive stone piers and abutments. Approach spans are traditionally composed deck plate girder spans. The through truss span has a couple unusual details. Looking at the portal of the bridge, the end posts have lattice on top instead of cover plate, which is a less common detail, but more unusually, at the top and bottom, the lattice ends and there is cover plate instead. Also unusual is the portal bracing, which is similarly configured. At the center, a lightweight lattice is present on all four sides of the beams, but the portal bracing knees have a steel plate cover. Thus, visually, the bridge has steel plate in the corner of the portals, with a lattice appearance in the middle of the end posts and portal bracing. Overall, this gives the bridge an unusual and distinctive appearance. Otherwise, the truss is traditionally composed. The bridge was economically designed, with the vertical members toward the center of the truss being less massive than the ones at the ends, accounting for the variations in stress.
