Outside of the city, the road this bridge carries is known as Plains Road.
The railing design on this bridge is a standard design but does not show up often. It can been seen on the Narrows Road Bridge, and some truss bridges like the New Boston Bridge. The State Street Bridge is also interesting because it is an older and river crossing example of a technology used on expressway overpasses like on Sigler Road, that of the curved t-beam bridge.
A plaque on the bridge mentions that this bridge was built by the city of Eaton Rapids in 1948, with the contractor being B. H. Sargent.
This bridge has been well cared for, which is a rare but welcome sight. Although modern railings were added to the inside of this bridge, the city left the historic railings on the outside, and even painted them black to keep them from rusting away! Also, the modern railings are a design that is less obtrusive than Armco railings, which is good news. The deck looks to have been redone as well. The beams may have been painted with a protective coating as well as part of this project.
