| Burkhardt Drive Bridge | Burkhardt Drive Over Douglas Park Lake | Chicago: Cook County, Illinois | Metal Deck Arch, Stationary | 0 By: Unknown |
This bridge appears to be an extremely rare example of a spandrel-braced three-hinged steel arch bridge. Very little information is available about this bridge. The construction date for the bridge is unknown, however it appears to be a very old structure. Douglas Park first opened in 1879, with major renovations and additions being constructed in 1905. While it is possible the bridge dates to 1879, it seems more likely that the bridge dates to 1905, based on the style of the bridge. The bridge features railings that appear to be original railings with some portions of them being replaced, such as the poles on top. Otherwise, the bridge retains high levels of historic integrity. The main arch includes a built-up beam with v-lacing. Arch connections are riveted. This bridge, originally built for vehicular use, is today maintained for pedestrian use only.
