This bridge is one of four rare Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridges in Joliet. For an overview of Joliet's rolling lift bridges, see the Jefferson Street Bridge page.
Two of the four Scherzer rolling lift bridges in Joliet have two lanes and are narrower than the other two which carry three lanes. The appearance of these bridges are much different because of the narrower design. They have the illusion of looking taller, and the feeling of passing through a tunnel is more pronounced when you drive across this bridge. Oddly, both of these two-lane bridges feature builder plaques crediting the Mississippi Valley Structural Steel Company with building the bridge. The three-lane bridges have no builder plaque.
This bridge is painted blue instead of the green seen on the other Joliet bridges. I like to see a variety of paint colors, although this may indicate that at some time all the Joliet bridges will turn blue! A painted 2005 label was painted on the bridge, so this bridge reflects the work of a more recent painting than the other bridges. Either way, it is nice to see that these bridges are being maintained and cared for.
