Iowa has one of the largest and richest collection of historic bridges in the country, with the most historic bowstring truss bridges, and numerous truss bridges of all kinds. Winneshiek County is one of the top counties in the state. Although Iowa does not demolish as many historic bridges as many states, and many bridges have also been preserved, more historic bridges are destroyed by flooding in Iowa than any other state. Preservation of Iowa's bridges must include careful flood analysis and often preservation of its bridges should include placing them on the ground as a non-functional exhibit.
