Maine is a state that has not had a large population of historic bridges, nor does it have any 19th Century bridges on the current highway system. However among bridges it does (or did) have, there are nevertheless a number of unusual, rare, or otherwise significant historic bridges. In recent years however, preservation of these bridges has been exceedingly rare, and demolition of many bridges has been ongoing including historic bridges with national significance. Unless things change, Maine will soon have very few bridges of historic value remaining.
