This bridge is a relatively large and well preserved remaining example of a bridge type that Michigan built quite a bit in the late 1920s and early 1930s. This bridge features abutments that deviate from the standard design a bit, perhaps because this was an urban bridge, as the abutments allow for the lights to be mounted. This bridge is in a mixed level of integrity. The historic integrity is high. Structurally, this bridge was rated as poor condition in the National Bridge Inventory. However, the concrete on the bridge has been painted with a protective sealant suggesting that someone was trying to take care of this bridge. The bridge has not always been cared for, as there has been some spalling on the railings, prior to being painted. Thus it is unclear what the future might be: preservation or demolition. Because the bridge acts as a city centerpiece, the preservation of this bridge should be pursued, as the bridge plays a major role in making the downtown area look beautiful and historic.
This bridge replaced a seven panel pin-connected Pratt through truss built in 1884 by Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio.
