St. Clair County has... or had... a relatively large number of old stringer bridges built in the late 1930s and early 1940s that feature an unusual railing design. This bridge was the largest of those remaining in the county, but on the other hand was also in the poorest condition and on a fairly busy road. The bridge was supported by steel bents. Steel bents often suffer greatly from salt application on roadways, as salt leaks through the joints and cracks in the bridge over the piers, and drips down onto the supports. This bridge is a great example of why alternative de-icing solutions need to be used, to preserve historic bridges, save money, and provide longer car life too.
