This bridge is not really historically significant, but it is more attractive than a modern replacement would be. The bridge does seem to tell an interesting story. Maps, including the one shown on this website for this bridge, show an elaborate interchange-type intersection for Klock Road with M-63, although both roads are not limited access highways of any kind. This interchange no longer exists in any form, although the dirt approaches and road beds remain, although the roads and bridges that would have rested upon them are long gone. These were built for a planned relocation of M-139 that never happened, which would have turned Klock Road into a busier road. Klock Road remains today a very lightly traveled two-lane road heading into a fairly quiet industrial area in Benton Harbor. The Klock Road Bridge however is a very wide four-lane structure with a concrete median, similar to that found on the busy M-21 Grand River Bridge. The bridge was likely built wide in anticipation of the increased traffic that was expected from a realignment of the M-139 highway.
This bridge has been well maintained, and its steel stringer show signs of being painted recently.
