This is one of the few remaining bridges with any historic value in Lapeer County. Lapeer County once had some very special railroad overpasses, but these have all been demolished. Lapeer County, like most of the Michigan's thumb counties, has an extremely poor preservation track record.
This bridge is actually maintained by MDOT, and not the county, but it is in poor condition, mainly due to salt damage on the steel bent supports, and it will likely be demolished in the future.
This bridge is a standard design that was built on trunk line roads, similar to the demolished A-45 Bridge in Allegan County. The Lapeer Road Railroad Overpass retains original railings, although modern Armco guardrails have been mounted onto them. It crosses over a section of rail line that has been completely abandoned.
