| Portage Bridge | Railroad (Norfolk Southern) Over Genesee River | Rural: Livingston County, New York | Metal Pinned Pratt Deck Truss, Stationary | 1875 By: Unknown |
This bridge sits on cast iron supports that show an 1875 date on them. It is unclear if the remainder of the bridge structure is this old, such as the deck truss spans themselves. The types of structural steel appear to standardized to be an 1875 structure. Perhaps it underwent major renovations at some time. Either way, it is an old, large, and significant structure. It is historically significant for being a large and impressive engineering accomplishment. Any and all parts that do indeed date to this 1875 date are also significant for their very old age.
This bridge is a large structure in a large park. Time restrictions prohibited any more than a few detail photos and views beside the bridge. Better views of this bridge and a gorgeous waterfall can be had by those with time to walk down into the valley further. With that said, any website visitor who has visited this park and is willing to share additional digital photos of this bridge, feel free to send an email.
