HABS HAER mentioned that they believed this bridge is the second longest continuous span through truss. I don't know if they meant that for when it was built, or even today. The bridge was built in 1929. Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was the original owner.
I would be able to appreciate this "untouchable" bridge more if I could walk across it and really experience the massive size of this bridge, and also get detail photos of connections, members and other such things. The time that this bridge was built meant that the attractive steel with v-lacing and lattice was still being used, but load demands were higher so the members on this bridge are also very massive. The result is a very impressive structure. This is a cantilever bridge, and it has a distinctive appearance because the trusses do not come to a sharp point over the piers. This bridge features a considerable deck plate girder approach at each end. These approach spans are supported by truss supports.
