Hamilton Railroad Bridge Truss with stone arch approaches. Railroad (CSX) Butler County, OH Hamilton Great Miami River

When Rick McOmber and I took our trip to southwestern Ohio, we pushed daylight to its limits, starting early and ending late. We ended with this bridge, with barely enough light to work. As such, I have limited detail photos of this spectacular bridge, yet I got some interesting photos with the last few minutes of direct sun shining on the bridge as shown above. As a three span through truss bridge, this bridge is an impressive bridge on that alone. If you look way over to the left of the above photo, you can barely see something just as interesting, which is some stone arch spans that provide an impressive and beautiful approach to this bridge, and compliment the steel trusses quite well. There are more than just thee stone arch spans however as seen in the above photo... indeed there are over a dozen spans! The arch approaches are themselves an impressive bridge, if that was all there was! The long string of stone arches have the create the appearance of arch bridges from Roman times or something!

Going back to the truss spans, they are subdivided Warren through truss spans with riveted connections. There is extensive v-lacing and lattice on the bridge. A deck plate girder span provides an easterly approach to the bridge, and also acts as an overpass over a road. The trusses and plate girder sit on concrete piers and abutments. I am unsure if these spans might be newer than the stone arches or not. It seems odd that the piers are concrete, but those arch spans are all stone.
