Key Facts

Bridge Name

Type Road Location City Crossing
Nith Road Bridge Truss Oxford-Waterloo Road Waterloo Region, ON Ayr Nith River

Located just south of Piper Street in the town of Ayr on what appears to be an abandoned section of Nith Road, this is a rare example of a pin connected through truss in Ontario. This eight panel structure has been closed to vehicular traffic, although you can still walk down from Piper Street to admire it. The south end of this bridge features a steel stringer approach span. The southern end of the truss bridge sits on steel caissons which appear to be mounted on a concrete pier. The north end simply rests on a concrete abutment. There is no v-lacing, although lattice is present on the portal bracing, which also has an unusual shallow arch to the bottom of it.

This bridge is located in a scenic wooden setting. The Nith river cuts a small, steep valley just north of the bridge. This attractive setting would make this bridge a great candidate to restored in its original location for non-motorized traffic. This would give visitors and residents of Ayr alike a pleasant place to walk down and enjoy the river and bridge. I doubt it would take much work to get this bridge in shape for pedestrians. The largest thing in my opinion would be sandblasting and painting the bridge itself.
