| Wallaceburg Railroad Bridge | Railroad (CSX) Over Sydenham River | Wallaceburg: Chatham-Kent Region, Ontario | Metal Through Girder, Movable: Swing | 0 By: Unknown |
This may not be the most visually appealing historic bridge, as a rather simple plate girder, but it is nevertheless historically significant. Although truss swing bridges, with their intricate geometry are more visually appealing, plate girder swing bridges appear to be less commonly found. Swing bridges in general are uncommon. They were frequently replaced with bascule bridges, which eliminated the obstruction for boats in the center of the river. This is a rather large swing span, and since most boat traffic is recreational in nature, this swing bridge has been able to continue to efficiently serve both boats and trains.
