| Main Street and Others Over Erie Canal | Lockport: Niagara County, New York | Metal Deck Girder, Stationary | 1914 By: Unknown |
The bridge is a very wide deck plate girder. Its deck appears to have been redone recently. According to photos on the sign near the bridge this bridge once had lattice guardrails, which have been replaced.
This bridge is noteworthy as a former record-holder for width. When built it was the widest bridge in the world. The loss of the original lattice railings greatly detracts from the structure's aesthetic value however.
Another interesting idea would have been to make the deck wooden or metal grate so that it was more noticeably a bridge surface.
Interpretive signs are located near this bridge. You can view them in the photo gallery for this bridge as well.
