Key Facts
Bridge Name Facility Carried / Feature Intersected Location Structure Type Construction Date / Builder or Contractor
Johnstown Railroad Bridge Railroad (Norfolk Southern) Over Conemaugh River Johnstown: Cambria County, Pennsylvania Metal Pinned Pennsylvania Through Truss, Stationary 1901 By: Unknown

A stone on the abutment lists what appears to be a 1901 construction date. This date seems sensible, given the design of the structure.

This bridge is quite unusual to view. It is a narrow railroad bridge, serving a single track, yet it is both long and tall due to its impressive single span design. It looks almost precariously narrow from the portal view, yet when viewed from elevation, it reveals its massive and complex design.

The bridge is a twelve panel pin-connected Pennsylvania truss bridge of significant single span length. Pin-connected Pennsylvania truss bridges are uncommon, and the truss design also represents one of the more complex truss designs around, and offers pleasing geometry to look at. For these reasons of historical significance and aesthetic quality, it is a very significant structure and should be considered historically significant both on a local and national basis.
