The only thing that Pennsylvania and Preservation have in common is the same first letter!

And the 2005 award for "Most Evil Truss Bridge Hating County in the World" goes to... Elk County! Lets give them a round of applause for making their county as ugly and boring as possible! As if demolishing what I feel is the greatest truss bridge in the world, the Shanley Road Bridge, Elk County decided to rape the Clarion River landscape further by demolishing this breathtaking structure at the same time. The contractors had already removed the pony truss span that was at one end of this bridge when I visited it. The reasons for demolishing this bridge were the same as with the Shanley Road Bridge. Rather than fill this page with my ranting about how stupid Elk County and PennDOT is, I instead would like to point you to the Shanley Road Bridge for my opinion of Elk County and PennDOT. I will however, reiterate here that the Scenic River Act was in part responsible for the demolition of these bridges. The scenic river act prohibits two structures at one location, meaning they could not leave the truss bridge standing next to the new bridge. This law needs to be changed to save the historic bridge and prevent the river-bank damaging construction of new bridges.
