Canal Road Bridge Truss Canal Road Niagara County, NYRural Erie Canal

This bridge is nearly identical to the Day Road Bridge. Visit that bridge for a more in-depth discussion of this bridge and its historic perspective, as well as a discussion about the safety and function of the restored bridge. I would recommend reading that page first, and then returning to this one.

This bridge is a restored through truss, and does not retain its original lattice guardrails. It is a rare example of a double-intersection warren through truss. The unusual configuration is also referred to as quadrangular warren. Despite Canal Road's appearance on the maps as a more busy road than Day Road, this bridge did not appear to carry as much traffic. This one had no stop signs at either end of the bridge, but its alignment allowed for a better view before crossing.

No plaques survive on this bridge, however NYSDOT's plaque crediting themselves with restoring the bridge (although the Erie Canal authorities actually forked over the money to prevent its demolition) are present. NYSDOT lists the bridge as being built in 1910 by Empire Engineering Corp. These bridges seem quite bulky considering their construction date. This bridge was restored in 1993, which is ten years before Day Road was restored.
