Exchange Street Bridge Truss Exchange Street Niagara County, NY Lockport Erie Canal

For more details about this highly unusual structure type, see the larger Adams Street Bridge page. The Adams Street Bridge is the more historically intact bridge that is within sight of this bridge. I have included this bridge as a comparison to Adams Street Bridge.

This bridge was clearly restored at some recent point, as many rivets have been replaced with bolts, and modern metal railings have been added on the road side of the trusses. Bricks still pave the roadway leading up to the bridge, but these are all new, and not original like those on Adams Street. Like Adams Street Bridge, this bridge retains original guardrails for the sidewalks. This bridge is a couple years older than Adams Street, as a plaque indicates. The plaque shows the McMyler-Interstate Company of Cleveland Ohio as being the builders of the bridge in 1915.  A portion of the plaque was cut out and a 1959 placed in the hole. I can only guess that some sort of repair took place in 1959. The restorations I observed at the bridge looked much more recent than 1959. These modifications I observed no doubt affect the historic integrity of the bridge, but will help to keep the bridge around for a long time to come.
