Fox Road Bridge Truss Fox Road Sanilac County, MIRural Elk Creek

Although Sanilac County has no more truss bridges remaining on its public roads, there are two that are either privately owned or are abandoned completely. The Cash Road Bridge is the private bridge, and this is the abandoned bridge. A small, yet significant structure, this bridge is essentially a queenpost design, which is highly unusual. An additional member that runs from half-way up the end post to the bottom chord deviates this bridge from the standard queenpost design. Despite the fact that it uses a truss design commonly found in the earlier truss years such as the 1880s, this bridge appears to have been built between 1900 and 1910. I arrive at this date estimate due to the presence of concrete abutments and riveted connections on the bridge. The bridge originally had a wooden deck, which is gone now, except for one board at the north end of the bridge. There is v-lacing present on the vertical members of the bridge. Original pole railings remain on the bridge. Despite the loss of the deck, this bridge retains fair integrity, and it could be relocated and restored if someone cared enough about this bridge to do so. I know I would move it into my backyard if I had the time and resources!
