I visited three vertical lift bridges, all built to the same standard plan, while in the Niagara area: this KH-20 Bridge, the Welland Main Street Bridge, and the Glendale Avenue Bridge. I took the most pictures of, and have the most information on the Glendale Avenue Bridge. I would recommend checking out its page first, and then returning here.
I caught this bridge while it was up, and so was able to get some shots of what one of these bridges look like when they are raised. This bridge differed from Glendale Avenue, in that its diagonal members had pieces of plate steel connecting them, rather than a solid riveted member. Look at the photos to get an idea of what I am trying to describe! Since freighters take so long to pass under these bridges, and since KH-20 is a busy road (it is the old highway into Niagara Falls) this bridge being up caused quite a backup of traffic. It made me sad to see all those people just sitting in their cars looking miserable! Here was an opportunity for them to get out and check out not only the lift bridge, but also a pony truss bridge that is right by the lift bridge, and they passed it by! I know I took advantage of the opportunity!
This bridge is known locally as the Allanburg Bridge, and managed to set a boat on fire, when it collided with a freighter. I did not notice any visible damage to the bridge that had been repaired, although I did not truly do an official detail of this bridge... I just short some overview photos.
